2016 Embedded System Security Forum, Shanghai, China

November 10th, 2016 Embedded System Security Forum was held in Jumeirah Himalayas Hotel in Shanghai China. The forum was organized by Chinese Electronic Appliance Corporation, China Electronic Corporation Science and Education Commission, hosted by China Electronic Meeting and Information Company, and sponsored by the China Electronic Exhibition and Information Company, China Software Association Embedded Branch, Embedded System Beijing Forum, China Embedded System Industry Alliance, Application of Electronic Technology Journal and 52Solution.com.

The forum invited Allan He – Vice Chief Secretary of China Software Industry Association Embedded System Branch, Yunxi Zhang – Head of Industrial Security in TUV Rheinland China, Steve Ridley – Principal Software Engineer of Aerospace Simulation Company, Junchao Wang – Advance Technology Marketing Manager of ARM China, Dong Yang – Senior Car Processor Technology Engineer of Texas Instrument, Zheng Liu – Senior Consultant and Technology Manager of ETAS Shanghai, Huabo Liu – Senior Engineer of NXP Semiconductor Greater China, Prof. Xiapu Luo of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Wei Xu – R&D Manager of Shanghai MXChip and many other experts/academicians from companies/schools to discuss advance technology in embedded system security in the Internet of Things.

Morning meeting was hosted by Chengzhe Cui, Vice President of China Electronic Meeting and Information Company. Yunzhu Di – President of China Electronic Meeting and Information Company and Allan He – Vice Chief Secretary of China Software Industry Association Embedded System Branch delivered opening speeches for the forum.

In Allan’s speech, he pointed out the two meaning of embedded system security, first is the functional security: the system must contain any internal hazard; second is resisting external harm, for example network attack, which is the topic of the afternoon meeting – IoT security. We also invited TUV and British expert to introduce functional security technology which might help China electronic industry to enhance product security and reliability. In the afternoon, speeches from Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Shanghai MXChip helped us to learn the pressing and important issue of IoT security.

Zheng Liu, Senior Consultant and Technology Manager of ETAS Shanghai delivered his speech titled “The Challenge for Embedded System in Automotive Industry and BOSCH’s Counter Measure”, during which he introduced security service and solution covering the whole lifecycle of a car.

Steve Ridley, Principal Engineer of WITTENSTEIN discussed partition and error detection implemented with MPU in his talk “Using the MPU with an RTOS to Enhance System Safety and Security”.

Dong Yang, Senior Car Processor Technology Engineer of Texas Instrument, introduced the strength and design of the latest car processor from TI, especially on the security mechanisms.

The second half of the meeting was held by Allan He.

Junchao Wang, Advance Technology Marketing Manager of ARM China delivered speech “Intelligent Security for the Connected World”. He introduced how ARM constructs trusted device with partners, TEE verification of application processor by GP, and focused on IoT security with the new Cortex-V8M architecture.

Yunxi Zhang, Head of Industrial Security in TUV Rheinland China presented “Functional Security in Industrial Field”. Topics include what is functional security and why is it important, what requirements are involved for enterprises, and what are the main focus points.

Huabo Liu, Senior Engineer of NXP Semiconductor Greater China presented his talk on “Application of Secure Processor and Microcontroller in Financial Payment System”. For finance and payment, security always come first. Liu discussed on multiple POS system on their implementation and consideration of security. He also mentioned NXP’s advance secure processor solution.

Huabo Liu – Senior Engineer of NXP Semiconductor Greater China

Prof. Xiapu Luo of Hong Kong Polytechnic University presented the issue of IoT device with security breaches. With Auto ODB device as example, Luo demonstrated that hacker can gain access to a car on a smart phone. He also give recommendation on security of this kind of device.

The last speaker was Wei Xu, R&D Manager of Shanghai MXChip, with title “IoT Security and MICO System Implementaton”. Xu spoke about the architecture of MICO and embedded WiFi module, how MICO guantees the firmware on a smart device cannot be altered, and how to preserve user privacy by using end-to-end encryption.

During the meeting, the audience interact with speakers by asking questions and expressing views. And we are sure both the speakers and audience are hoping to attend the next conference in 2017.
